March 2006 A new processing agent developed in the laboratories of the Mannheim-based rubber specialists of Rhein Chemie Rheinau GmbH, Mannheim, Germany, guarantees improved processing of tire compounds. Aflux® GE 1872 is the development code for a revolutionary combination of agents that make it possible to considerably simplify the processing of highly loaded silica rubber compounds.

Mannheim – A new processing agent developed in the laboratories of the Mannheim-based rubber specialists of Rhein Chemie Rheinau GmbH, Mannheim, Germany, guarantees improved processing of tire compounds. Aflux® GE 1872 is the development code for a revolutionary combination of agents that make it possible to considerably simplify the processing of highly loaded silica rubber compounds.
Since the process of mixing highly loaded silica rubber compounds requires less energy input, problems arising from strongly increased temperatures during the mixing process are avoided. The extrusion behavior, particularly at high loading levels or a high molecular weight of the rubbers, improves considerably in terms of extrusion speed, yet swelling and surface quality of the extrudate. Tests show that the improvement in filler dispersion is sustained, even after storage of the compounds, and results in less increase in viscosity.

Rhein Chemie has developed new products in this segment based on its expertise in processing agents for the Aflux® and Aktiplast® product ranges. The efficiency of the processing agents stems from an optimized combination of surface-active substances with especially customized properties as a compatibilizer between the low polar polymer and the high polar white filler. For example, the use of Aflux® GE 1872 in highly loaded silica compounds under typical processing conditions results in the marked decrease in mixing viscosity that is common with traditional processing agents. Unlike a control system without common processing aid, the vulcanizates produced from this compound demonstrate the same high values of elastic modulus coefficient and hardness. There was no evidence of any negative impact on the compound in terms of vulcanization speed and cross-link density.

Fatty acid derivatives are traditionally used as processing agents for diene rubbers. Although these materials are suited for many applications, they do alter the dynamic-mechanical properties of the vulcanizates. But applications that place high demands on the dynamic properties, in particular, of the product, such as silica tires, primarily aim to sustain as high a level as possible of dynamic performance while at the same time optimizing filler dispersion and, if possible, lowering mixing viscosity.
These properties are guaranteed by the new Aflux® GE 1872 processing agent.
